On Monday, August 12, 2024, the Rumacula campaign was presented at the Multimedia Hall of SMAN 3 Semarang as part of the final stage of the “AMSA Youth Project 2024,” a social campaign competition organized by Universitas Gadjah Mada. The presentation was led by three senior students: Naurelle Tabina as Campaign Leader, Firzza Agung as Creative Director, and Arika Amar as Event Manager. The term “Rumacula,” derived from “rumah” (home) and “muscular,” aims to foster a friendly, comfortable, and supportive environment for individuals with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), allowing them to interact freely and receive appreciation from society. The campaign’s mascot, “Rula,” represents “Respect Uncommon Loyalty Amiable,” embodying the core values of respect, distinction, loyalty, and warmth. The mascot’s design features a four-leaf clover symbolizing glory, wealth, love, and health.

Anik Marwati, Chairperson of YPDMI (Yayasan Peduli Distrofi Muskular Indonesia), spoke about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy during the event. She explained that YPDMI, established in 2019 by Prof. Dr. Sunartini Ph.D Sp.A (K), a Gadjah Mada University graduate and descendant of Hamengkubuwono, aims to support those affected by DMD. “DMD is a rare genetic disorder caused by a mutation on the X chromosome that affects the production of dystrophin protein. This condition leads to progressive weakening of both skeletal and cardiac muscles,” Marwati stated.

Marwati also described the impact of DMD on children: “Children with DMD often show delays in motor development, such as walking and standing. They may face difficulties in activities requiring muscle use, and as the disease progresses, their muscle function declines, necessitating increased assistance for daily activities.”

In his address, Kak Chandrakanti encouraged patients, stating, “Those suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy should remain resilient and patient while facing this rare condition.”

Following the speeches, Naurelle Tabina, a member of the campaign team, conducted a session explaining DMD, covering its causes, symptoms, affected organs, and treatment options. The presentation was followed by an interactive Q&A session with many questions from the students.

The campaign team concluded the event by announcing an upcoming webinar titled “Let’s Get to Know Duchenne,” scheduled for August 13, 2024. The webinar, led by Dr. Hindun Zundiana SpKFR AIFO (K), aims to provide further insights into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. SMAN 3 Semarang students are encouraged to participate and take advantage of this informative opportunity.
